Saffire Freycinet Lodge

Saffire Freycinet Lodge

An undiscovered outpost that balances an adventurous week in the Tassie outback with plush digs and endless exploring

Teeming with wildlife, rugged wilderness, and expansive terrain, Tasmania sits in the Tasman Sea just left of New Zealand. A state of neighboring Australia, Tasmania is known colloquially as “Tassie,” and 45 percent of the island is protected as national parks, reserves, and World Heritage Sites. There are only about 600,000 inhabitants, and they’ve got room to spread out over 26,410 square miles (to put things in perspective, there are 4.3 million people living in Sydney alone). Add in the fact tourists haven’t yet swarmed to this X on the map, and we’re packing our bags! After several days of outback adventure on our Truly Tasmania trip, there’s only one way to unwind—at the architectural wonder that is the Saffire Freycinet lodge.

History of Natural Treasures

Located on the Freycinet Peninsula at the foot of the Hazards Mountains, Saffire is an architectural masterpiece. The aptly named lodge takes after the sapphires that were discovered here, ranging in color from blue to green, yellow, and purple. Rich in history (aboriginal people have lived in the area for at least 35,000 years), the peninsula began to attract settlers in the early 1920s in search of seafood and eventually to establish vineyards. Today the area draws visitors from around the world to enjoy the landscapes and staggering wildlife.

Architectural Design + Delight

Every curve of Saffire was built with purpose. Mirroring the surrounding elements, the building was inspired by the pink granite of the rising Hazards Mountains and the lapping of the waves on the white beach. Local materials were used in construction wherever possible. Surrounded by timber, stone, and leather, you’ll feel as involved with the island from the inside of the Saffire as you will during your adventures every day.

Signature Experiences

Freycinet National Park is your playground during your stay at Saffire. Explore famous Wineglass Bay, rated one of the world’s best beaches, go on a guided hike, have a gourmet picnic of barbequed seafood and farmhouse cheese, and return by boat for a scenic tour of the coastline. Feel the need for speed? Rip along the beach in a quad bike. Curious about the original inhabitants of the area? Hop over to Schouten Island by boat and check out culturally significant sites.

Post-Safari Relaxation

After nearly a week exploring Tassie’s outback, you might be ready for a little more relaxation than adrenaline. Craft your own recovery day: A private yoga session overlooking the ocean? A run on the beach and an afternoon at the Saffire spa? This is all assuming you ever want to leave your room in the gorgeous lodge, which, believe us, is hard to do.
